Van Brake Repairs & Replacements in West Bromwich

A loaded van asks a lot more of its brakes than a car ever does. Extra weight in the back, constant multi-drop stopping and starting, and daily mileage that racks up fast all mean brake pads, discs and drums wear down sooner – and a fault that would be a minor annoyance in a car can be a serious safety and downtime issue in a van you rely on for work.

At Ferdotti, we service vans across West Bromwich and the Black Country every day, from single tradesman pickups to multi-vehicle fleets. We know what van brakes are up against, and we get you back on the road with minimum disruption to your working day.

Signs your van’s brakes need attention

  • Grinding under load: Grinding is often worse in vans because the extra weight over the rear axle accelerates pad wear – by the time you hear metal-on-metal, the disc may already be scored.
  • Squealing on multi-drop runs: Constant start-stop driving wears wear indicators faster than steady motorway miles. A squeal that only shows up after a full day of deliveries is an early warning, not something to leave until the next service.
  • Pulling to one side, fully laden: A van pulling under braking when it’s carrying stock or tools can point to a seized caliper struggling with the extra weight – worth checking before it affects handling on a loaded run.
  • Longer stopping distances with a full load: Vans are far more sensitive than cars to changes in load, which is why many rely on a load-sensing brake valve to adjust braking force between empty and fully laden. If stopping distances feel inconsistent depending on your load, this is often the cause.
  • Spongy or low pedal: Air in the lines or low fluid affects vans just as it does cars, but with a heavier vehicle to stop, a soft pedal leaves far less margin for error – especially fully loaded.
  • Dashboard brake warning light: Usually low fluid or a leak. On a van in daily use, don’t wait for the next scheduled service – get it looked at before your next round.
  • Handbrake needing extra clicks: Beyond the safety issue, a handbrake out of adjustment is an easy MOT fail on a Class VII test and can take a van off the road unexpectedly.
  • Rear drum wear: Many vans still use rear drum brakes rather than discs, chosen partly because they suit a strong parking brake under load. Drums need their own inspection routine – they don’t show wear as visibly as a disc and pad.
  • Fluid overdue a change: Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, and heat from heavy, repeated braking (think loaded hill starts or motorway runs) accelerates the effect. Two years is the usual guide – sooner if your van works hard.

How van brake systems handle the extra load

Because a van’s weight can vary hugely between empty and fully loaded, the braking system is engineered differently to a car’s from the outset. Many vans use a load-sensing proportioning valve, which adjusts how much braking force goes to the rear wheels depending on how much weight is on board – preventing the rear wheels locking up when the van is empty, while still giving enough stopping power when it’s loaded.

  • Brake pads and discs work the same way as in a car – friction material biting against a disc to slow the wheel – but on a van they’re sized and rated to cope with higher gross weights, and typically wear faster given the mileage and load profile most vans see.
  • Rear drum brakes, common on many van models, use a different mechanism: curved brake shoes press outward against the inside of a drum rather than clamping a disc. They’re durable under sustained load and integrate well with a mechanical handbrake, but they hide wear from view – which is why a proper inspection matters more than a quick visual check.
  • Brake calipers clamp the pads onto the disc under hydraulic pressure. On a hard-working van, calipers see more heat cycles than on a car doing the same annual mileage, which is one of the more common failure points we find on commercial vehicles.
