Tyre Maintenance

Correct Inflation: Maintain the recommended tyre pressure specified by the vehicle manufacturer. Underinflated or overinflated tyres can affect handling, fuel efficiency, and tyre lifespan.

Tread Depth: Measure the tread depth periodically using a tread depth gauge. Adequate tread depth ensures proper grip and traction. In the UK, the legal minimum tread depth is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre.

Tyre Types

Summer Tyres: Designed for optimal performance in dry and wet conditions, summer tyres offer excellent grip and precise handling. They are made from a harder rubber compound, allowing them to maintain their shape and provide better control on warm surfaces.

Winter Tyres: Winter tyres, also known as snow tyres, are specifically engineered to enhance traction and control in cold weather conditions. They feature a softer rubber compound that remains flexible at low temperatures, providing improved grip on snow, ice, and wet surfaces.

All-Season Tyres: As the name suggests, all-season tyres are designed to perform adequately in various weather conditions, including dry, wet, and light winter conditions. They provide a balanced compromise between the grip of summer tyres and the winter capabilities of dedicated winter tyres.

Performance Tyres: Performance tyres are engineered to deliver exceptional grip, handling, and cornering abilities for high-performance vehicles. They often feature specialized rubber compounds and tread patterns that optimize performance in dry conditions, sacrificing some performance in wet or winter conditions.

Commercial Tyres: Commercial tyres for Vans and Trucks are designed to carry more load and therefore it is important to ensure the correct type is used on your vehicle. These tyres are often marked with either ‘C’ (Commercial), ‘XL’ (Extra Load) or ‘RF’ (Reinforced).

Tread Patterns

Directional Tread: These tyres have a V-shaped tread pattern with grooves that point in one direction. They are primarily designed to channel water away from the tyre’s surface, reducing the risk of hydroplaning and enhancing wet grip.

Symmetrical Tread: Symmetrical tread patterns have the same design on both sides of the tyre’s centreline. They provide a balanced performance in terms of grip, noise, and comfort.

Asymmetrical Tread: Asymmetrical tread patterns combine different tread designs across the face of the tyre. The inner side is designed for wet traction, while the outer side focuses on dry grip and cornering stability.

Tyre Sizes

Understanding tyre sizes is essential for finding the right fit for your vehicle. Tyre sizes are typically indicated by a combination of numbers and letters, such as 205/55R16. Here’s what each component signifies:

Width (205): The first number represents the width of the tyre in millimeters, measured from sidewall to sidewall.

Aspect Ratio (55): The aspect ratio is the percentage that represents the tyre’s height compared to its width. In this example, the tyre’s height is 55% of its width.

Construction (R): The letter “R” indicates radial construction, which is the most common type used in modern tyres.

Rim Diameter (16): The last number represents the diameter of the wheel rim in inches.
